Iroko Oilstone Box
This oilstone box was mostly completed as part of my fine woodworking intermediate course (see www.schoolofwoodworking.co.uk if you're interested).
Made from iroko, an African hardwood with complex interlocking grain, this was an exercise in accurate squaring and working to accurate dimensions in a difficult hardwood.
The coffin top needed clean, crisp straight lines to be at its best. My new Veritas low angle jack plane with the high angle iron was great at dealing with the grain.
The curved bevels on the underside were hand cut with a spokeshave.
This was also an opportunity to learn some basic metalwork skills, hand filing, drilling etc. This gives a nice finishing touch to a project as can be seen in the detail below.
The cut-outs for the stone in the base and lid were my first go at using a power mortiser. This was completed to a lovely finish with a Lie-Nielsen hand router and Ashley Iles bevel edge chisels.
